Art Portfolio: Storyboard

In class, we continue the topic in regards to character drawing. This time, storyboard. A very useful skill in terms of creating the idea for: presenting a product, a story and illustrate... a poem.

For my progression route, I could choose a poem or graffiti.

I came with the idea that the best way is to explore some English poems because I like reading them in my mother tongue. I did not have much time, I picked the first website with a collection of poems.

There I can browse by subjects. I picked a Beat period. And the Kaufman's poem came up, titled Believe, Believe.

''Believe in this. Young apple seeds,
In blue skies, radiating young breast,
Not in blue-suited insects,
Infesting society’s garments.

Believe in the swinging sounds of jazz,
Tearing the night into intricate shreds,
Putting it back together again,
In cool logical patterns,
Not in the sick controllers,
Who created only the Bomb.

Let the voices of dead poets
Ring louder in your ears
Than the screechings mouthed
In mildewed editorials.
Listen to the music of centuries,
Rising above the mushroom time.''
(Kaufman, 1996)

First, I started from sketch the first 'block' with title. Then I drawn the main characters 'young apple seeds'.
The right top corner with NOT was only for drawing purpose. I wanted to express that (according to the text) this place is not for 'blue insects'.
The presentation was helpful. From time to time I looked at types of angles. Without them, I am sure that I could not reach that effect. But still, there is a lot to work on. I need to take more time to understand how to show my way of a view.

The work flow was pleasant, oboviously pictures I took in bad light. (night)

I was terrified when it came to using the ink pen. I was worry that I destroy the effect. Otherwise, I did not have a wide range of tip sizes. Only three :/

I still will be updating the look of this piece. Because I still waiting for more ink pens.

I admit I did not keep the composition. In the end, I saw that it took me more space in comparison to the upper part. I can't fix it now. But next time, I will try to keep more attention to the sketch and overall look.

  1. This seems to be an approach to create a visual narrative that suits you - perhaps you should consider using this as a way of organising your ideas for your project. Also, in this small piece you have created a really effective visual language that works very well. did you find out any background information about Bob Kaufmann that you could add to this post?

Set Project: The exact reason why and sketches

I have not straightened why I chose to illustrate the lyrics. As you may have noticed, I know quite a lot about music from the last century and always dreamed about the connection with visual art. Especially in this case, when the album is laid out as a story. Therefore, taking advantage of this opportunity I intend to make something familiar using illustration. You see, songs have a lyric - a story. And I want to share with those, by giving my version. In fact, Primitivism is related to the 60s pop culture and the insights I will publish gradually. The album that I chose is unique in terms of the tracklist.  Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band  has no gaps between tracks. Therefore they made an album that sounds like one continuous song. ''Highly debated it is considered as a one of the first concept album'' (The HollyHobs, 2020). Some of the songs had been established according to the newspapers headers/stories.  The reasons why I chose this relation to the theme ...

Art Portfolio Project: First update - The story

When I took a look for the sign off sheet, it made me think about the story for my Leporello. I pointed out the initial ideas and spirit of the whole story.  It will not be act-playing roles, no dialogues. This six pieces story will take a viewer into a mysterious world of Native Americans.  I spent a lot of time thinking about how I want to present the culture and sense of spiritual world perceive by tributes eyes. I interested in the beliefs of this culture. I want to start explaining the background for the strip. Native Americans believed that all living things were watching over by guardian spirits. That could be; trees, wind, animals or people. Mostly, forces of nature.  Usually, the young boys were overcoming the ''journey'' to become a man. They believed that the guardian spirit, once fund, would bestow a special power on the boy and then, he would return to the tribe. Meaning of great spirit was a bit similar to be watched by an angel in the Christian religi...

Set Procject: Finalisation

Here, I sharing with the process of placeing imagines into a mockup. I solved the issue with proper cutting the document. And also presented the second visualisation with a blue background.
