The body of research & self research

This week on Art Portfolio classes we are looking after artist research. To understand the meaning of someone's piece, the most important thing (which will help you to understand) is the personality. Without knowledge of someone's experiences and roots, we could take someone's work as pointless.

One of the magnificent paintings were breaking the rules of art. The reason is, that artists have been open for themselves. From the early XVIII, it is possible to divide the traditional academic works of the personal ones. It began from unique perceive, especially Turner's Rain, Steam and Speed. Even then, in 1844 the piece consists of a bit of abstraction. But widely known, unusual captured landscapes made by Claude Monet. Historians say that those full of depths and colours are because of a sort of illness. For example, Degas had a retinal eye disease. Furthermore, mentioned before Monet had cataracts.

I think the source of an unusual painting of those times was at their fingertips. Maybe they were enough brave to show up in sunlight.

Either, I should begin this post with my personal piece, called 'body of research'. Which is not looks like the template from the class.

This is it, almost like a self-portrait, but I place around me all my basis and timeline. I prefer to make it digital because I wanted to try out a graphic tablet. I was not sure then how big the piece will be. I cannot just draw a contour of the body.

In general, this piece is an illustration of my life and feelings. It starts from the left side, with my childhood. I the middle, me starring at the hanged old photos, it shows the current time. Underneath is my years of training at the athletic club (4 years ago I quit). And the right side is the future.

Honestly, I do not use to explain each part of my work. It is hard because it is personal. I know, that even if someone saw the drawing and explanation, still do not know me.

I appreciate the unnamed titles of works. It is forcing to imagine or research someone's intentions. Even on displays, artists rather talk about fewer intimacies things.

The final piece reminds me of a work of Polish artist Jerzy Duda-Gracz and his Field Hamlet in polish Hamlet Polny. Made in a time after a second world war when the communist entered Poland. It was a chaotic and restless period for citizens. This painting presents a moment in stagnation. It is hard to explain, this piece is based on polish theatre and the scenography of Hamlet.

Jerzy Duda-Gracz, Hamlet Polny, (1977)

It was not a simple inspiration, I made this piece without looking at someone's work. It was generally my vision. I appreciate my high school knowledge. Therefore, I believe, we could learn more about artists and pieces, to allow us to create original art in future.

  1. An interesting post - I understand this exercise was very personal, but some text to describe some of your experiences would have helped (in particular about your sporting achievements and why you 'quit'). It's up to you how much information you give about yourself, so you can afford to be selective.
On another issue, have a look at Joe Sacco's work 'The Great War' from 2016 as an example of a piece of work in Leporello form. Have a look at this link (with annotations from Sacco: (http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/books/2013/11/joe_sacco_s_panorama_of_world_war_i_s_battle_of_the_somme_the_great_war.html?via=gdpr-consent) It was turned into a mural on the Paris Subway: https://www.jamesmellorcreative.com/cartoons-pictures-with-power/

Set Project: Final 3D piece

It is high time to show the final 3D outcome. I have been waiting for a sunny day to take a picture of Mr Kite. I found a perfect corner in the window ledge. I managed to find some white sheets for the ''session''. Unfortunately, they were curved and undulating and having no extra ones I tried to make it professional.  All this showcase is after Photoshop edit.  On those shoots I wanted to emphasise his posture. Nevertheless, it is still a bit stiff. Here I captured all his attributes in front of him. And one more, with his hands up. Which personally, I can compare them with gorilla's.  I took two pictures from different angles. In order to zoom in the portrait details. In addition, one from the front. I made a few mistakes regarding background preparation. I could glue or taped pages together to avoid the gaps. However, the software edit made a brighter impression, which is definitely an advantage.  Maybe a thicker paper and front light would reach a more prof...

Set Project: The exact reason why and sketches

I have not straightened why I chose to illustrate the lyrics. As you may have noticed, I know quite a lot about music from the last century and always dreamed about the connection with visual art. Especially in this case, when the album is laid out as a story. Therefore, taking advantage of this opportunity I intend to make something familiar using illustration. You see, songs have a lyric - a story. And I want to share with those, by giving my version. In fact, Primitivism is related to the 60s pop culture and the insights I will publish gradually. The album that I chose is unique in terms of the tracklist.  Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band  has no gaps between tracks. Therefore they made an album that sounds like one continuous song. ''Highly debated it is considered as a one of the first concept album'' (The HollyHobs, 2020). Some of the songs had been established according to the newspapers headers/stories.  The reasons why I chose this relation to the theme ...

Set Procject: Finalisation

Here, I sharing with the process of placeing imagines into a mockup. I solved the issue with proper cutting the document. And also presented the second visualisation with a blue background.
