On today Art Portfolio class, we manage to find an artist who is related to our project. In my case, the relevant art patch is an illustration. Therefore, I have been searching the contemporary illustrator. Why contemporary? Because those people had been inspiring before. They had been educated and done a lot of research to find ourselves artistic patch.
I choose not a well known English artist named Laura Carlin. She was born in Glastonbury. She studied in The Royal College of Art and worked under Andrzej Klimowski (famous polish graphic designer) to learn her trade.
She was worked for the Tate Modern, provided artworks and exhibitions for children. Generally, she spends most of the time working on a new children book.
Her one of the last book, The Iron Man by Ted Hughes she created a three-dimensional paper cut of the main character. Judging by her multi experiences, her artworks consist variety of techniques. Which I would like to gain in my Art Project. The same I can say about her drawing style. The figures reminds her unique style. The same I will be suggesting in my pieces.
The perfect example is a book A World of Your Own, made with painted, paper objects. ''Pebbles, clothes pegs and drinking straws become people, a hair combs a mode of transport.'' (Agency, 2020) This book won a Biennial of Illustration Bratislava in 2015. Jury examines this piece of work as a 'dialogue between technique and medium with an extensive frame of reference'.
The techniques which she uses is based on the effect which she wants to gain. On the illustration above, she used a mixture of watercolour, acrylic and coloured pencils. She enhancing her art with 3D models in regards to collaborating with the photographer too. In general, she prefers hand made pieces.
On the interview in OFFSET Sheffield in 2016, she moved an important quotation 'Like so many illustration students, I felt pressured/obsessed by the need to find my own ‘style.’ It took me a while to realise that it’s not about a style, but working out what and how you want to communicate through your images.'
She is one of the most influential creatives, according to ADC Young Gun. She runs a website - click
Except for creating illustrations, she also is a ceramist. She had an exhibition in Japan, and a solo show in The House of Illustration featured 'a 650 tile mural depicting the history of London as well as twenty illustrated plates, classical figurines and a noah’s ark'. It was satisfying in terms of her fascination in history, especially battle theme. Below, I insert a picture of a beautiful plate with houses theme.

How has she inspired you in your project? how might her work help to develop what you are doing? What kind of visual language are you developing for this project? Does it relate to hers? If not, why not? Talk about what YOU are doing for this project in relation to your work. That is the point of research, whether it is into other artists or into the background (Native American Culture) of your project.
