Set Project/Art Portfolio: Thoughts and character design

I have been searching for a lot of inspirations to keep the right path on my project. However, a lot of things changed. About two weeks ago, I was sure how the project should look. I always wanted to create the background a bit in digital and a bit by hand. But when it comes to drawing the main character, I struggle with where this project going to. The aim of an illustration is narration, which I forgot about it. I still try to not rush and take advantage of more spare time. I still developing the skill of drawing likeness. In conclusion to yesterday's post, I started the day with character design. This is also an Art Portfolio task.

It was a long process and a lot of new sheets...

I separate the workplace window, to easier look at the pictures.

This is the first sketch. I do not like it, is too realistic. The way of look reminds me of Disney's movie characters.

At this stage, I just a bit convinced myself about good points on this sketch. I needed to move on. And the fear came to my mind; how I want to draw the likeness on his face?

I made it! But it not compares to the rest of the body...

Really, it is a disaster.

I did not continue the drawing. Because I cannot find different Native American's outfit. Secondly, only the face looked well. I came with another idea of how to capture this character.

The last screenshot presents a new approach for this character. And apparently again, it was a fail. Just look at the rest of the bod definitely, he has too long chest and a strange proportion of legs. My first thought was to create a bigger head than the rest of the body, emphasizing the proud pose. Maybe, I should start again, but it discouraged me that much...

Afterwards, I looked for the good sides of this drawing. For me, it is the part with plume and face. I took it to myself, 'ok, so I can still develop this thing' anyway I will need to extend the range of facial expression. And I have much more fun with this part.

I completely changed the theme, I picked one picture of my favourite band. And turn the same settings as with Native American character (on Photoshop).

On this stage, I gave up again, becouse it still looks like a doll. I needed more expression.

The new sheet. Different approach. I started from the suggestion lines, which lead me to capture approximately the pose.

I took a screenshot already after features drawing. It was the nicest outcome today. I still have on top on my head word ''expression''.

The next thing which I am proud of is my approach to eliminate the prejudice about proportion. The thing is not in realistic drawings, but with emotions. To make people see and feel the same. Maybe this is not a rule in general. But I like that style. Therefore, still, I will be searching and trying.

Today was a lot of disappointment. In the middle of the process, I was not sure what I want to reach. I needed something different, something with which I will be satisfied.

In the next post, I will share my background board for Leporello.

  1. Your character drawing of the native American is not bad - it is important to recognise that you won't get it right the first time and you have to keep developing the idea by making mistakes. This post demonstrates that you are a bit directionless - once you have your backstory finalised, you will find it easier to visualise what you are doing. Finally I am not sure that you are relating your project to the theme you were given at the beginning of the set project.

Set Project: The exact reason why and sketches

I have not straightened why I chose to illustrate the lyrics. As you may have noticed, I know quite a lot about music from the last century and always dreamed about the connection with visual art. Especially in this case, when the album is laid out as a story. Therefore, taking advantage of this opportunity I intend to make something familiar using illustration. You see, songs have a lyric - a story. And I want to share with those, by giving my version. In fact, Primitivism is related to the 60s pop culture and the insights I will publish gradually. The album that I chose is unique in terms of the tracklist.  Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band  has no gaps between tracks. Therefore they made an album that sounds like one continuous song. ''Highly debated it is considered as a one of the first concept album'' (The HollyHobs, 2020). Some of the songs had been established according to the newspapers headers/stories.  The reasons why I chose this relation to the theme ...

Set Project: Sketches and coming back to the first plan

In the last days, I concluded that I should focus on the reasons why I choose this topic and the style of this project. I think I started to be weak and not sure what I want to do. I think the reason is in a large number of researches. Same with techniques and artists to look at. I summarise that I am not capable to mix various inspirations at once. I came back to my first inspiration Anto van Hertbruggen. Because I always wanted to make art like that, no matter what's it gonna take. Here I will discuss the elements which I want to use to combine this pice in one. Here is the whole work with the background. As I mentioned before, I looked at how Anton work on his illustrations. He usually filling few sheets in drawings (as layers for one illustration).  First, I found a great view on google maps. I am interested in the territories of Canada and the northern landscape. The place is in Northwest Territories, in Yellowknife.  click I sketch this place on two sheets of paper. Then...

Welcome to my blog!

Tell me something about yourself:  I am a young artist studying IYZ Art&Design with Graphic Design BA, in De Montfort University. Live in the Leicester city centre. My pathway started since I have been influenced by a close family by Claude Monet’s works. Paintings made by my uncle’s hands were great copies. Those pieces of art have been surrounding me still. I have been studying at Art School in Bydgoszcz, were I gain helpful skills and workshop.  I would like to explore more possibilities to share my skills. The significant key of my artworks made by oil paints is the variously, including different textures and mediums. I’m sure that our expressions and feelings made us artists. In my artworks, I’m trying to take after my deep feelings of research and my inquisitiveness. Furthermore, I’m fascinated by the 50’s and 60’s century artists. Especially, Futurist artist like Boccioni, Silva, Gonzalez. Their appearance have been a tremendous impact on my art.  Claude Monet...
