Set Project: The Brainstorm update

Today, we started a discussion about the importance of the SMART objectives in order to reach measurable to reach final outcomes. Not forgetting about the quality and time specification.

Before I share the post regarding this, I need to set all my thoughts. I need to reassure that I will meet the conditions and I would be able to conclude comprehensive and constructive answers.

I conduct research on the album that I want to illustrate. Of course, not every album include four songs. Therefore, I will choose one where the title suited for the theme. Where I can apply a variety of elements.

I made a brainstorm of the possible albums which I reckon, include tracks suitable for illustrating. I wanted to came up with the album close to my heart, thus I have chosen Magical Mystery Tour. By chosing this, I considered tutor's comment from the story telling post. And I started sketching it.

The idea of presenting the final pieces:

Digital booklet

I found some examples of presenting the booklets. Here I putting the link. This example is not good enough in terms of the design. Especially captions and the quality of images.

Even though my idea is barely similar to the existed booklet. Also, each scene from the movie has been illustrated with a story. - click and here

Next day update: This morning, I came up with another idea.

I will illustrate songs from their other album. Because they already have a comprehensive set from the Magical Mystery Tour.

For instance, as well as Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles in the same year made an album Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band. Furthermore, I reckon that the title is pretty close to my story and personal feelings (which I further exemplified in the storytelling post).

One more, this album also is telling a story. This can be a great point to start with. In this year (1967), their career was full of psychedelic trips and rhythm/instruments discoveries. The album cover is a photography masterpiece with eye-catching elements. Full of mystery, pure colours and fun. Furthermore, some of the songs from the tracklist were played in an animated featured film from 1968 - Yellow Submarine. I have watched this movie, and I found it as a perfect example of futuristic features and colours. Coming back to personal feelings, this band, the music which they created gives me encouragement and inner power to overcome life's highs and lows.

Unfortunately, This album has 13 songs, which is a barrier not meant to be crossed. I can always pick 4 songs to work on. This can be a form of sample.

The thing is, that I want to illustrate this album in form of a narrative story. The great thing is, that the first track is an introduction to the cirrus. As we know, the context is amazingly connected even for Primitivism colours and the human being. But the motif is not only about the cirrus.

It can take the viewer into the journey through the past. Therefore, I intend to look at the other examples of psychedelic art. To get a clearer context, the album covers would be the perfect example. As I sketched in my ideas, I can present them in form of a booklet. But then, I would need to create a new album cover. This problem I can solve by separating those pieces into 4 illustrations. The titles would be named after the lyric which I have been inspired with.

In another idea, it will be a completely different form. Where the main target audience would be children. The book would encourage the young generation to interest in the recent past. Not in terms of drug use, but in greatness perception and imagination got through the songs in those times. The freedom of colours is a stimulating point for them. Not without reason, I have mentioned the Yellow Submarine, where the younger one where the target audience.

For me, it is also an important base to share with. Nowadays, children seem to be constrained from using imagination in order to amplify the realistic values in everyday life. This book would encourage mature adults to purchase because of the nostalgic journey through the past. Giving the same opportunity for the younger ones to reflect on their imagination.

Therefore, summing up those points. I would create a colouring book. It would have 4 ready painted/digitalized pieces with 4 black-white ones made for colouring. I only wonder what to do with lyrics. I could generalise the whole album in four pieces, or under each illustration write a name of the track which I have been inspired by.

(I do apologise for the bad light)

Another idea regarding the childish customers will be an inspiration taken from the beginning of this post. For instance, I place below one of the Magical Mystery Tour illustration pages.

Tonny Barrow and Bob Gibson, Magical Mystery Tour/Booklet Page 8&9, 1967

Interesting is, that the booklet is customized by an artist except for the original EMI album cover.

I can make it a narrative story behind the tracklist. I mean, inspired by this. I would draw the beginning (from the introduction), some of the interesting happenings from the lyrics with closing (saying goodbye to the audience) captions. I think I would be then a story for any age.

Personally, I do like making comic strips (as you saw in the last term). Therefore, it would be a great opportunity to use my skills for this narrative story. By considering the time given, still, I am not quite sure whether I would make it on time.

Or by coming back to the booklet idea, I would create a short version of Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band. In order to do this, I can make a post regarding a further examination of the booklet made by Tonny Barrow and Bob Gibson (picture above).

The next post will be regarding the 3D piece.

  1. Really good post - its interesting to see how your thought processes are working through this project.

Okay - I've been thinking about this for a few minutes now - consider the cover of Sgt Peppers. There is a narrative in there, some nostalgia for lost heroes, some villains. In a sense it is telling a story. So, you take ELEMENTS from the 13 songs on the album and then YOU visualise them, based on your own research. You could choose individual lines or phrases. You then illustrate those ideas/elements/phrases in your style and tell a new story through those elements you choose. You could invent an entire new story or place yourself in that story as a character experiencing the events that you create. I like the idea of a colouring book, with four 'example' pages and four black and white ready to colour. We can discuss this further in our tutorial on Wednesday.

Set Project: The exact reason why and sketches

I have not straightened why I chose to illustrate the lyrics. As you may have noticed, I know quite a lot about music from the last century and always dreamed about the connection with visual art. Especially in this case, when the album is laid out as a story. Therefore, taking advantage of this opportunity I intend to make something familiar using illustration. You see, songs have a lyric - a story. And I want to share with those, by giving my version. In fact, Primitivism is related to the 60s pop culture and the insights I will publish gradually. The album that I chose is unique in terms of the tracklist.  Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band  has no gaps between tracks. Therefore they made an album that sounds like one continuous song. ''Highly debated it is considered as a one of the first concept album'' (The HollyHobs, 2020). Some of the songs had been established according to the newspapers headers/stories.  The reasons why I chose this relation to the theme ...

Set Project: Sketches and coming back to the first plan

In the last days, I concluded that I should focus on the reasons why I choose this topic and the style of this project. I think I started to be weak and not sure what I want to do. I think the reason is in a large number of researches. Same with techniques and artists to look at. I summarise that I am not capable to mix various inspirations at once. I came back to my first inspiration Anto van Hertbruggen. Because I always wanted to make art like that, no matter what's it gonna take. Here I will discuss the elements which I want to use to combine this pice in one. Here is the whole work with the background. As I mentioned before, I looked at how Anton work on his illustrations. He usually filling few sheets in drawings (as layers for one illustration).  First, I found a great view on google maps. I am interested in the territories of Canada and the northern landscape. The place is in Northwest Territories, in Yellowknife.  click I sketch this place on two sheets of paper. Then...

Welcome to my blog!

Tell me something about yourself:  I am a young artist studying IYZ Art&Design with Graphic Design BA, in De Montfort University. Live in the Leicester city centre. My pathway started since I have been influenced by a close family by Claude Monet’s works. Paintings made by my uncle’s hands were great copies. Those pieces of art have been surrounding me still. I have been studying at Art School in Bydgoszcz, were I gain helpful skills and workshop.  I would like to explore more possibilities to share my skills. The significant key of my artworks made by oil paints is the variously, including different textures and mediums. I’m sure that our expressions and feelings made us artists. In my artworks, I’m trying to take after my deep feelings of research and my inquisitiveness. Furthermore, I’m fascinated by the 50’s and 60’s century artists. Especially, Futurist artist like Boccioni, Silva, Gonzalez. Their appearance have been a tremendous impact on my art.  Claude Monet...
