Set Project: The exact reason why and sketches

I have not straightened why I chose to illustrate the lyrics. As you may have noticed, I know quite a lot about music from the last century and always dreamed about the connection with visual art. Especially in this case, when the album is laid out as a story. Therefore, taking advantage of this opportunity I intend to make something familiar using illustration. You see, songs have a lyric - a story. And I want to share with those, by giving my version. In fact, Primitivism is related to the 60s pop culture and the insights I will publish gradually.

The album that I chose is unique in terms of the tracklist. Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band has no gaps between tracks. Therefore they made an album that sounds like one continuous song. ''Highly debated it is considered as a one of the first concept album'' (The HollyHobs, 2020). Some of the songs had been established according to the newspapers headers/stories.

The reasons why I chose this relation to the theme I partly exemplified in previous posts. Because, firstly of feeling a strong relation to those years and secondly, it remembrance special moments of my life and virtually raise my spirit.

I made some visualisations of the songs which I heard. For me, the initial skill for an artist is to shape the imagination. By various tasks for instance. Even more challenging effects on the development of this skill. Moreover, illustrators need to be different inspirations in order to develop skills. In this case, I am going to collect initial knowledge to be sure of the important basis of the theme. The research, which I have started, is mainly developed by my recent ideas about this project. Eventually, however

That was a rolling start with an idea of illustrating lyrics. I took a few approaches.

The first I made during listening to Bowie's ''Lady Stardust''. I was interested in the lyric, therefore after double-check, I decided to visualize it. I just draw the titled person with starry haze.

The second one was ''Oh! You pretty things''. The songs starts with a daily story. Such as ''shake up your bed (...) I have made some breakfast and coffee'' (Bowie, 1971). And then I combined the confuses surrounding this person. I wanted to emphasise the verse ''I look at my window what do I see'' (Bowie, 1971).

The last one I made after subject research. I have been inspiring by psychedelic album covers. For instance, the cat has made with a black outline - like in Gauguin's works. The shapes and relation to the objects fulfilling the futuristic appearance.

  1. You said in your email that you were struggling to find direction in your project - this illustration sketch shows to me that you have developed already a really nice approach to the visual language for this project. You are combining the ideas you have well - we can discuss how you present your work and the next steps you take in this project during our tutorial, but i think a comic book as a visual representation of concepts taken from Sgt Peppers would make a really nice project. This illustration is excellent, it shows understanding of your source, without being too derivative. Well done.

Finally, have a look at Grayson Perry's tapestry works as a way of telling a big story in one image. We looked at some of his work last term in Contextual Studies.

Set Project: Final 3D piece

It is high time to show the final 3D outcome. I have been waiting for a sunny day to take a picture of Mr Kite. I found a perfect corner in the window ledge. I managed to find some white sheets for the ''session''. Unfortunately, they were curved and undulating and having no extra ones I tried to make it professional.  All this showcase is after Photoshop edit.  On those shoots I wanted to emphasise his posture. Nevertheless, it is still a bit stiff. Here I captured all his attributes in front of him. And one more, with his hands up. Which personally, I can compare them with gorilla's.  I took two pictures from different angles. In order to zoom in the portrait details. In addition, one from the front. I made a few mistakes regarding background preparation. I could glue or taped pages together to avoid the gaps. However, the software edit made a brighter impression, which is definitely an advantage.  Maybe a thicker paper and front light would reach a more prof...

Set Procject: Finalisation

Here, I sharing with the process of placeing imagines into a mockup. I solved the issue with proper cutting the document. And also presented the second visualisation with a blue background.
