Set Project: Seeking for inspirations

Since the past week, I started to watch films of the late 60s. I do it so because I need a visual stimulus for making illustrations. As results, I am convinced of a smooth start basing on my memory. Honestly, for years I was looking for a useable source for movies, interviews and a lot more. By and large, youtube handling very limited data regarding the years 1960-1970. Once I found out the book in pdf version from archive.org, I dig deeper into available sources. This is undoubtedly, even boundless website, managing thousands of archives. There, I found a section with Art&Culture, also rare movies. For instance, animations from the 60s in order to understand how the colours worked there and how do characters look like. I am not a big fan of all cinematography from those times however, without those films, nowadays the television would not work that well.

Nevertheless, I found also animations with a strong influence on pop culture. I believe, that in 1967 for instance, people being fuzzy were willing to watch those cartoons. Therefore even the lyrics, which I intend to work on, are soaked by the trip and lecture guidance.

I virtually did not point out the example of such animation. It is, with not an ambitious title The Wacky World Of Mother Goose. Where the main character ''Mother Goose'' is dressed as a magician. Except for the loyal means of conveyance - the goose, everyone from her village has a bit blunt smiley face. The other striking fact is that Mother Goose cooking pot. Which hopefully does not mean pot. And her despicable enemy Count Walktwist with twisted legs wearing a green uniform. Therefore, I have a suspicion of a source for inspiration in many more rock culture outcomes. And according to that suspicion, I consider eventually watching that sort of cartoons to be fully inspired with. I mean that, by understanding in-depth my subject of matter.

And here is my approach in this direction:

The key element was facial features. The appliance of primary colours and dark ink also suggest the bond between Naive art. Overall, it is my simplified version of some of the cartoon's spots.

  1. Never heard of this animation - it was a revelation to me. You made some interesting links to your work here. Follow up with a look at shorter cartoons of this era, such as Wacky Races, The Perils of Penelope Pitstop, Dastardly and Muttley - they are animated in a similar way and are very evocative of the time.

Set Project: The exact reason why and sketches

I have not straightened why I chose to illustrate the lyrics. As you may have noticed, I know quite a lot about music from the last century and always dreamed about the connection with visual art. Especially in this case, when the album is laid out as a story. Therefore, taking advantage of this opportunity I intend to make something familiar using illustration. You see, songs have a lyric - a story. And I want to share with those, by giving my version. In fact, Primitivism is related to the 60s pop culture and the insights I will publish gradually. The album that I chose is unique in terms of the tracklist.  Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band  has no gaps between tracks. Therefore they made an album that sounds like one continuous song. ''Highly debated it is considered as a one of the first concept album'' (The HollyHobs, 2020). Some of the songs had been established according to the newspapers headers/stories.  The reasons why I chose this relation to the theme ...

Art Portfolio: Planning primary research

For your project, you will need some primary research so that you can either understand your market and focus your work more clearly in a real-world context or you will need background research to inform your project work that comes from a primary source. I conducted research on familiar comic books or something with past matters content. I found a story of the beginnings of The Beatles. It is also related to my project.  The  Baby's in Black: The Story of Astrid Kirchherr & Stuart Sutcliffe  takes reader back to the early 60s, when Paul, John, George, Pete and Stuart decided to extend their musical abilities by playing in Kaiserkeller club, Hamburg. The book was originally published in Germany in 2010. Therefore, the vibe of this book ideally reflects the place and experiences. This ultimate graphic novel has 195 pages. Accordingly black&white design reflecting the title. The author, Arne Bellstorf used individual renditions by pulling a lot of effort into...

Set Project: Sketches and coming back to the first plan

In the last days, I concluded that I should focus on the reasons why I choose this topic and the style of this project. I think I started to be weak and not sure what I want to do. I think the reason is in a large number of researches. Same with techniques and artists to look at. I summarise that I am not capable to mix various inspirations at once. I came back to my first inspiration Anto van Hertbruggen. Because I always wanted to make art like that, no matter what's it gonna take. Here I will discuss the elements which I want to use to combine this pice in one. Here is the whole work with the background. As I mentioned before, I looked at how Anton work on his illustrations. He usually filling few sheets in drawings (as layers for one illustration).  First, I found a great view on google maps. I am interested in the territories of Canada and the northern landscape. The place is in Northwest Territories, in Yellowknife.  click I sketch this place on two sheets of paper. Then...
