Art Portfolio: Planning primary research

For your project, you will need some primary research so that you can either understand your market and focus your work more clearly in a real-world context or you will need background research to inform your project work that comes from a primary source. I conducted research on familiar comic books or something with past matters content. I found a story of the beginnings of The Beatles. It is also related to my project.  The  Baby's in Black: The Story of Astrid Kirchherr & Stuart Sutcliffe  takes reader back to the early 60s, when Paul, John, George, Pete and Stuart decided to extend their musical abilities by playing in Kaiserkeller club, Hamburg. The book was originally published in Germany in 2010. Therefore, the vibe of this book ideally reflects the place and experiences. This ultimate graphic novel has 195 pages. Accordingly black&white design reflecting the title. The author, Arne Bellstorf used individual renditions by pulling a lot of effort into...

Art Portfolio: Project development in the real world

Today, we discussed the importance of presenting art in the real world. In previous post, I determined the aims of my project. As I reckon, I moved points about the universality of the target audience. Therefore I will try to stick with the expanded audience by the design of my drawings. By writing this, I have a vision of two colourful pieces per page with indicated text. Everything will be tailored to grab attention.  Therefore, I started sketching a sample of the strip. As you can see in the picture below I also sketched the visualisation of the page (page example). However, I think I will modify the number of ''blocks''. I would need to of them to insert lyrics. That gives two illustrations and two lyrics blocks. In order to sketch a sample of the illustrated strip, I needed to listen to music. I chose the song  Good morning.  For me, it has a clear state of the ordinary worker's routine. And it tells a story of starting the day, about going to work, meeting a...

Art Project: Considering my work in the real world

What influence could your project have in real world? - I intend to create a book. The illustration will encourage the reader to listen to particular songs. I will create a book for curious readers of all ages so they can learn more about the fascinating recent history and culture. Will your project show a point of view or show something that might make people think differently? -This book will change young generation perception and will remind the influence of the late 60s. It will also explain how nowadays art has been created on that. Mostly, the part of senior society could make a link between the younger society. Also, I can concern the cover approachable for children as a activate book. It has an appearance of the comic strip, therefore even more I am convinced of a positive teenager's attitude for instance. How else does your work have influence? It is not a superficial example, however, it will be Bob Gibson. It is a designer from my very first research post regarding comic...

Set Project: Page layout

This week initially shows the very first achievements regarding the Set Project.  On the timescale, I pointed out that I will establish the layout for the song-page-strip. I made some calculations.  The first factor, was accessibility to the materials, to be exact - the paper. I do not have a special watercolour paper, as far as I remember I was dissatisfied with the sheet facture. Therefore, I found it easier to use a high gsm paper from the A3 sketchbook from the last term. However, I intend to redraw the A4 format in the middle and work on this resolution in the vertical orientation. My idea of creating each song page goes as it follows: First, on the ready-made layout starting from the top I going to sketch an interpretation of about 1-2 verses. Then, in the block below (which will be shorter) I am going to leave the space for the lyrics. The question was, how I suppose to insert that text? To keep the next page, I do not want to hand-write all script. Then I came up with ...

Art Portfolio: Project Sign-off

Today I have a tutorial regarding the set project. We filled up an approval form discussing my project's plan.  We agreed that I need to obtain another sources from comic book/Graphic Novels writers/artists to expand the subject matter. On the Pro forma, I forgot to specify what software I intend to use. It will be Photoshop and Illustrator.  I have noticed the tendency to search for inspirations during the process. Therefore, I will be gradually updating this section. My plans for the next posts; Research of the Sgt. Pepper's album cover, warm-up sketches, an example of colouring with watercolour paints and finally the process with sketching the first page.  The 3D outcome needs to be further exemplified. I have been told about the importance of presenting my outcomes. I will have to manage more time this term for this part. Fortunately, a tutor will help me with the website appearance to introduce initial updates.

Art Portfolio: Project ideas and plan - Pro forma

Here I am sharing with you the completed Pro forma regarding my project ideas. I made several explanations, including the SMART acronym post which brings to me a certain attitude. Therefore, I promptly came back to work, because, according to my assumption, I should be on the halfway of sketching the first page. I shared some of my ideas before, however, I hope that this version of the pro forma will clarify my intends towards the project. There is also an incomplete list of the artist because I have a beside inspiration from cinematography. Such for instance;  Yellow Submarine.  To this day I was not sure how I can inscribe the lyrics into the ''comic strip'' layout. The problem I solved when I was writing. I came to the assumption that anyway I would need to edit the colouring pages and present the folded book. By taking this opportunity, the text will be pasted alongside the pictures. In general, before publishing sketched pages, I have a plan to create separate post...

Set Project: Smart Objectives

Alison Czinkota, The balance, 2020 In this term, for the Set Project, I want to create 4 pages long comic adaptation of the album by The Beatles,  Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band. The graphic design project I will carry out will use the theme of Primitivism by evoking the time capsule to the late 60' and influences from the ''psychedelic era''. I intend to use watercolours and ink pens, the final outcomes will be edited in software. I will use a motif from one of the illustrations to create a sculpture (3D). The final outcome will capture one of the elements from the 2D series. I will digitalize complete illustrations along with lyrics. The 3D object will be photographed. The target market for this collection will be people of any age (preferable adults). The colour palette will be based on Primitivism and futuristic outcomes. The complete digital portfolio will present each illustration in the gallery on my website by the deadline at the beginning of June. Sp...

Set Project: The exact reason why and sketches

I have not straightened why I chose to illustrate the lyrics. As you may have noticed, I know quite a lot about music from the last century and always dreamed about the connection with visual art. Especially in this case, when the album is laid out as a story. Therefore, taking advantage of this opportunity I intend to make something familiar using illustration. You see, songs have a lyric - a story. And I want to share with those, by giving my version. In fact, Primitivism is related to the 60s pop culture and the insights I will publish gradually. The album that I chose is unique in terms of the tracklist.  Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band  has no gaps between tracks. Therefore they made an album that sounds like one continuous song. ''Highly debated it is considered as a one of the first concept album'' (The HollyHobs, 2020). Some of the songs had been established according to the newspapers headers/stories.  The reasons why I chose this relation to the theme ...

Set Project: Comic artist research

I stopped on further research regarding comic strip idea. I do like the conception and the style of it. As I mentioned before the booklet accorded to the Magical Mystery Tour album. The author of the drawings is not a well famous kind. His name was Bob Gibson, the British designer and caricaturist. The pinnacle of his career reached the early 60s, thanks to the collaboration with The Beatles. This has been such a privilege, working among Klaus Voormann (creator of the  Revolver  album cover), Heinz Edelmann ( Yellow Submarine  designer) and Alan Aldridge (creator of  The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics). Those listed artists were mostly ''appreciated'' by the Fab Four in the late 60s. Therefore, their illustrations are made from a vibrant colour palette along with the individual character. For me, this team complemented each other.  Coming back to the first artist, Bob Gibson, born in 1938. Started his career in 1963 by designing  The Beatles Book.  Where h...

Set Project: 3D Research + Brainstorm

I did some research regarding 3D outcome for the set project. I attaching also a sketchbook page with the Brainstorm process. I have pondered artists from the Primitivism circle. However, they purely took inspiration from African masks. I found one exception so far. It is a relief on the wood stroke made by Gauguin. Frankly, I took it from the recently expanded movie about his biography. This idea I included in my sketch. I would need to change the surface because I do not have experience with the chisel. Therefore, considering the time given, I could not manage to finish it on time. The other idea, which some pieces of information I concluded in an earlier post, is a bust in the cubist spirit. But then, I do need to know the subject for the bust. My researches ended on Verner Panton furniture and his home designs. Undoubtfully, he has a great influent on the late XX century art. futuristic movement. His designs were recognisable in the period of the 60s and 70s. Which creates a part o...

Set Project: The Brainstorm update

Today, we started a discussion about the importance of the SMART objectives in order to reach measurable to reach final outcomes. Not forgetting about the quality and time specification. Before I share the post regarding this, I need to set all my thoughts. I need to reassure that I will meet the conditions and I would be able to conclude comprehensive and constructive answers. I conduct research on the album that I want to illustrate. Of course, not every album include four songs. Therefore, I will choose one where the title suited for the theme. Where I can apply a variety of elements.  I made a brainstorm of the possible albums which I reckon, include tracks suitable for illustrating. I wanted to came up with the album close to my heart, thus I have chosen Magical Mystery Tour.  By chosing this, I considered tutor's comment from the story telling post. And I started sketching it. The idea of presenting the final pieces: Digital booklet  I found some examples of present...
